If you’re a tradesman trying to manage your own social media, you’ve probably had this problem:
You’ve got plenty of photos of your work.
You know you should be posting them.
But actually turning them into something that looks decent on Facebook or Instagram is another job altogether.
That’s where Canva can help.
Canva is an online design tool that lets you create social media posts, flyers, business cards and other marketing materials without needing professional design software.
You don’t need to be a graphic designer to use it.
And if you’re happy managing your own social media, you don’t necessarily need to pay somebody else to create every post for you.
This guide will show you the basics.
No download. No email address required. No paywall. Just follow the guide.
Canva is a design platform that works through your web browser and through its mobile app.
It gives you ready-made sizes and templates for things like:
Facebook posts
Instagram posts
Instagram Stories
Reels
Flyers
Posters
Business cards
Facebook covers
Videos
Presentations
There’s a free version as well as paid Canva plans with additional features.
For a tradesman who simply wants to create some decent-looking social media content, you can do plenty with the free version.
Go to Canva and create an account.
You can use Canva on a computer, tablet or phone.
If you’re planning on doing quite a lot of design work, we’d recommend using a computer where possible.
The mobile app is useful for quick changes and creating posts on the go, but having a bigger screen can make designing much easier when you’re starting out.
This is one of the easiest mistakes to avoid.
Don’t create one random-sized graphic and assume it’ll look right everywhere.
Facebook posts, Instagram posts and Stories can all use different dimensions.
The easiest option is to search Canva for what you’re creating.
For example:
Instagram Post
Instagram Story
Facebook Post
Facebook Cover
Canva will then create a design using suitable dimensions.
That means you don’t need to remember the exact pixel sizes yourself.
Canva has thousands of templates.
These can be really useful when you’re starting out.
Search for something relevant to your business, such as:
Plumber
Electrician
Construction
Builder
Landscaping
Roofing
Small business
But don’t feel like you need to use the template exactly as it comes.
Think of it as a starting point.
Change the colours.
Change the fonts.
Replace the stock photos.
Remove things you don’t need.
Add your own branding.
The goal isn’t for your business to look like every other company that chose the same Canva template.
Upload your business logo so you’ve always got it ready to use.
If possible, use a good quality version.
A blurry screenshot of your logo taken from Facebook isn’t ideal.
If you’ve been given different versions by whoever designed your branding, keep them somewhere safe.
You might have:
Full logo
Logo icon
White logo
Black logo
Transparent logo
Different versions can be useful depending on the background you’re designing on.
One of the easiest ways to make your social media look more professional is to use the same colours consistently.
If your van, website and logo are blue and white, don’t suddenly make every Facebook graphic red and yellow because you found a template you liked.
Try to stick to a small selection of colours associated with your business.
For example:
Main brand colour
Secondary colour
Black or dark colour
White or light colour
You don’t need ten different colours.
Keeping things simple usually looks better.
The same applies to fonts.
Canva gives you access to loads of them.
That doesn’t mean you need to use them all.
Try choosing:
One font for headings
and
One font for normal text
You may even be able to use one font family throughout.
Most importantly:
Make sure people can actually read it.
That fancy handwritten font might look nice when it’s massive on your computer screen.
It might be completely unreadable when somebody sees the post for two seconds while scrolling through Facebook.
This is one of the biggest advantages tradesmen have when creating content.
You’ve already got the content.
It’s the work you’re doing every day.
Upload your own:
Before photos
After photos
Finished jobs
Work in progress
Team photos
Van photos
Tools and equipment
Behind-the-scenes pictures
You don’t need to use stock photos of a suspiciously clean plumber holding a spanner.
Show your actual work.
Potential customers want to see what you’ve done.
Canva can’t completely rescue a terrible photo.
Before you leave a completed job, take a minute to get some decent pictures.
Try to:
Clean the camera lens.
It sounds ridiculous, but it makes a difference.
Move rubbish and unnecessary tools out of shot.
Make sure there’s enough light.
Hold your phone straight.
Take several photos.
Take both wider photos and close-ups.
Take vertical video as well as photos.
You don’t need professional photography.
You just need clear pictures that actually show your work.
This is probably one of the most common Canva mistakes.
You’ve got a blank graphic.
So you start filling it.
Business name.
Telephone number.
Website.
Email address.
List of services.
Areas covered.
Special offer.
Five-star review.
“CALL NOW.”
Suddenly nobody knows where to look.
Your graphic doesn’t need to contain every piece of information about your business.
For example, a graphic might simply say:
Another bathroom transformation completed in Liverpool 🚿
Then use the caption underneath the post to explain the rest.
Give your design room to breathe.
Ask yourself:
What do I want somebody to notice first?
If you’re creating a review graphic, the review should be the focus.
If you’re advertising availability, the availability should be the focus.
If you’re showing a finished kitchen, the photograph should probably be the focus.
Don’t make your logo the biggest thing on every graphic.
Your customer already knows who’s posted it.
You don’t need to understand professional graphic design theory.
Just keep things tidy.
Canva will show guides when you’re moving objects around.
Use them.
Make sure text boxes aren’t randomly sitting at slightly different angles.
Keep similar amounts of space around things.
Line headings and paragraphs up properly.
Small details make a design look much more professional.
If your logo is square, don’t drag it sideways until it’s rectangular just because you need it to fit somewhere.
The same applies to photographs.
If something doesn’t fit properly, crop it.
Don’t stretch it.
A squashed logo immediately makes a design look homemade for the wrong reasons.
This is where Canva can start saving you loads of time.
You don’t need to design every post from scratch.
Create a handful of designs you can reuse.
For example:
Template 1: Customer review
Template 2: Before and after
Template 3: Helpful tip
Template 4: Availability
Template 5: Service spotlight
Template 6: Frequently asked question
Then each time you need a new post, duplicate the template and change the photo and text.
You’ve now got consistent branding without having to reinvent everything every week.
This is one of the easiest Canva posts for tradesmen.
Start with an Instagram or Facebook post.
Add two photos.
Put the original photo on one side.
Put the finished job on the other.
Add:
BEFORE
and
AFTER
Then add your logo somewhere small.
That’s it.
Don’t ruin a great transformation by covering half of it with text.
Let the work speak for itself.
Customer reviews are another easy piece of content.
Choose a simple background using your business colours.
Add:
★★★★★
Then add a short section from the customer’s genuine review.
Include something like:
Google Review
and your logo.
Keep it clean and readable.
You can then use the caption to explain what job the customer had done.
Even better, if you’ve got photos from their job, combine the review and finished work.
Got an unexpected cancellation?
Canva makes it easy to create something quickly.
For example:
LAST-MINUTE AVAILABILITY 🔧
We’ve had a cancellation this Thursday.
Liverpool & surrounding areas
Message us to enquire.
That’s enough.
You don’t need to list every service you’ve ever provided underneath it.
These can help break up your feed so you’re not constantly posting finished jobs.
For example:
PLUMBING TIP 🔧
Know where your stop tap is before you need it.
Then explain the advice properly in the caption.
Other examples could include:
3 signs your roof needs checking
Why does my fuse box keep tripping?
When should you replace your boiler?
When is the best time to have your garden landscaped?
You’re using your knowledge to create useful content.
Canva isn’t only for static graphics.
You can upload videos from site and turn them into Reels or other social content.
For example:
Before
↓
Work in progress
↓
Finished job
Add simple text explaining what’s happening.
You don’t need loads of effects and transitions.
Sometimes the actual transformation is interesting enough.
Canva has plenty of animations and effects.
Use them carefully.
Just because you can make every word fly onto the screen from a different direction doesn’t mean you should.
Simple usually looks more professional.
Choose one style and keep things consistent.
Your finished work should be getting the attention, not an animation spinning your logo around.
Once you’re happy with your design, download it in an appropriate format.
For most standard social media graphics, PNG or JPG will normally be suitable.
For video content, you’ll generally need MP4.
Canva will give you the relevant options depending on what you’ve created.
Then check the finished file before posting it.
Make sure:
Nothing has been cut off.
Everything is readable.
The correct photo is being used.
Your telephone number is correct.
There aren’t any spelling mistakes.
It’s much easier to fix something before you’ve posted it.
You don’t need every single post to look identical.
In fact, we’d recommend that they don’t.
But they should look like they belong to the same business.
Try to keep some consistency with your:
Colours
Fonts
Logo
Photo style
Tone of voice
Over time, people may start recognising your content before they’ve even looked at the business name.
That’s what good branding can do.
This one is important.
Once you’ve discovered Canva, it’s tempting to put absolutely everything inside a designed template.
Don’t.
Sometimes the best post is simply:
A really good photograph of your work.
Or:
A video showing the finished job.
Not every photo needs a coloured border, logo, heading and six graphics stuck over the top of it.
Mix designed posts with genuine photos and videos.
Your social media should still feel like a real trade business.
A good trade business feed might contain a mixture of:
Finished work
Before and afters
Customer reviews
Videos and Reels
Helpful advice
Behind the scenes
Meet the team
Frequently asked questions
Availability
Occasional promotional posts
That’s considerably more interesting than 20 graphics saying:
CALL TODAY FOR A FREE QUOTE.
Using too many fonts
Two is usually plenty.
Using too many colours
Stick reasonably closely to your business branding.
Tiny text
Remember most people will see your post on a phone.
Putting everything in capital letters
Use capitals for emphasis, not entire paragraphs.
Stretching your logo
Crop or resize properly instead.
Using low-quality images
Use the best original photo you’ve got rather than screenshots.
Using too many effects
Drop shadows, outlines, gradients, animations and glowing text don’t all need to appear on the same design.
Copying a template without changing it
Make it look like your business.
Putting your logo absolutely everywhere
Branding should support the content rather than overpower it.
Trying to make every post perfect
Social media moves quickly.
A good post published today is more useful than a “perfect” post that’s still sitting unfinished in Canva three weeks later.
Before posting a design, check:
☐ Is it the right size for the platform?
☐ Is my logo clear and not stretched?
☐ Am I using my business colours?
☐ Are the fonts easy to read?
☐ Is the text big enough for a phone screen?
☐ Have I used a genuine photo where possible?
☐ Is the most important information obvious?
☐ Is there too much text?
☐ Is everything lined up properly?
☐ Have I checked the spelling?
☐ Are telephone numbers and contact details correct?
☐ Have I checked the finished design before posting?
Not necessarily.
If you’re just getting started, we’d recommend seeing what you can achieve with the free version first.
There are plenty of free templates, fonts, graphics and tools available.
As you start using Canva more regularly, you may decide that some of the additional paid features would save you time.
But don’t assume you need to pay before you’ve even started.
Learn the basics first.
This is worth remembering.
Canva is a tool.
It can help you make things look good.
It can’t decide your entire marketing strategy for you.
A beautifully designed post isn’t much use if:
You’re talking to the wrong audience.
Nobody knows what service you’re selling.
You’re posting inconsistently.
You’re not replying to enquiries.
You’re not showing any genuine work.
The design is only one part of social media.
The content behind it matters too.
That’s completely fine.
This guide isn’t here to convince you that you need to pay someone to use Canva.
If you’re happy creating your own social media, save this guide, create a few templates and give it a go.
